February 8, 2026The Banana Bread Old Fashioned is a thoughtfully layered cocktail that drinks smooth and warm, with subtle notes of ripe banana, toasted walnut, and vanilla-forward bourbon. It’s a slow sipper, rich without being sweet, perfect for a leather-chair kind of evening.
This cocktail was inspired by a memorable Thanksgiving weekend spent at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville, Tennessee, where The Falls restaurant became a frequent stop. Among an already solid cocktail program, this drink stood out for its balance and creativity, offering a playful twist on the classic Old Fashioned while still honoring its roots.
At its base is Maker’s Mark Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whisky, a small-batch bourbon produced in Loretto, Kentucky since 1953. Known for its signature red wax seal and wheated mash bill, Maker’s Mark replaces rye with soft red winter wheat, giving the bourbon its trademark smooth, slightly sweet profile. Notes of vanilla, caramel, and oak make it an ideal canvas for the gentle banana and nutty accents in this cocktail.
Add the banana liqueur, bourbon, and several dashes of walnut bitters to a mixing glass. Fill with ice and stir slowly until well chilled and properly diluted.
Strain into a chilled rocks glass over a large clear ice cube. Garnish with a dried banana chip and serve.
