November 14, 2023Whipping up Hobo Dinners while camping harks back to the most fundamental cooking method and is incredibly simple. The very mention of Hobo Dinners transports me to my childhood when my family would venture into remote forests for camping trips. Money was tight, so we mostly camped for free, etching these memories into my heart. Our campsites would be nestled deep in the woods, and all our meals were prepared over an open fire. Basking under the stars and cooking over a crackling fire immersed us in nature's embrace, while the scent of smoke and rustling leaves charmed our senses.
Turn it into a memorable evening
Hosting a backyard fire pit gathering during autumn is a splendid experience with this recipe. Whether you're in the great outdoors or home, you can easily make Hobo Dinners using a fire or grill. Simply prepare the veggies and hamburger patties – that's all the prep you need! Encourage everyone to craft their own Hobo, and by using disposable plates and cutlery, there's no cleaning up to worry about later. Delight in your fireside dining experience and cap off the night with some delectable s'mores.
Armed with vegetables, potatoes, beef, and tin foil packed into our small cooler, Mom was ready for the adventure. Hobo dinners are not just easy; they're enjoyable to concoct as a team around the campfire.
Skip refrigeration worries with canned potatoes, canned veggies, and canned hamburger – all equally delicious! Serving individual portions makes mealtime exciting.
1. Unroll a 24-inch-long piece of tin foil.
2. Add 1/2 cup of hamburger (per serving)
3. Incorporate potatoes (1/2 cup per serving) or thinly sliced raw potatoes with skin. Add some onions for extra zesty flavor.
4. Toss in 1/2 cup of veggies. Choose from frozen mixed veggies, fresh chopped veggies, or drained canned ones. Season with salt and pepper according to personal preference.
5. Roll the foil lengthwise, then fold and press the sides firmly to seal the packet securely.
6. Arrange the Hobo Dinners on a grill grate over an open fire for about 20-30 minutes, maintaining distance from the flames. Flip the packets occasionally to prevent burning on one side. If you're using raw ingredients, double the cooking time. Check by opening a packet – if it's steaming and cooked through, they're all ready! Keep a vigilant eye on your dinners to avoid any burnt surprises.

Carefully wrap the foil around the dinner and seal it tightly.
To the side of your fire spread out some hot coals and set your packet on top of the coals keeping the seamed side up. Turn the packet about halfway through. open and using a thermometer check the doneness of the patty. Importantly if the vegetables can be easily pierced with a fork it is ready.
